Erik Truffaz Quartet with NYA – The musical background is perfect to have sex on it………no?

Friday, October 2nd, 2009 | News | No Comments

…………………..Every now and then… not so often… but just every now and then I hear something cool. Something so cool, that I stop whatever I’m doing and check it out. Being fortunate enough to be surrounded by music, musicians, and artists of all types on a daily basis, I begin to develop a shell that makes it hard for another song to break it. The Erik Truffaz Quartet with NYA is the newest group to smash that shell, and for the last 8 minutesabsolutely no work has been done

Erik Truffaz with NYASigfried

Born in 1960 in Switzerland, Erik Truffaz is a contemporary Jazz trumpeter who combines elements of hip hop, rock, and dance and occasionally partners up with some talented vocalists in order to create his own eclectic mix of down beats & dance music. Writing several albums on Blue Note,  The latest Truffaz release ‘Arkhangelsk’ is a mixture between pop songs, french songs, and jazz grooves like the one seen above in the video that stole 8 minutes from me.

A smoothness that’s hard to put into words, however the quasi-english chat that you’ll find on the youtube clip for ‘Sigfried’ made me laugh with the question “The musical background is perfect to have sex on it……… no?” and answered “It depends on the sex partner, but it certainly is an excellent song”.

Nice one Europe

Electric Wire Hustle drop some thoughts

Monday, September 7th, 2009 | News | 1 Comment

(Aotearoarepresent)

Miss P and bs caught up with Electric Wire Hustle‘s Taay and Myele recently in the lead up to the release of their self titled debut album.

Released on EWH‘s independent label ‘Every Waking Hour’ 9.9.09 in NZ, we wanted to know what the plan is now…

What’s in a name like Electric Wire Hustle?
T – A glimpse into what’s to come, a glimpse of what we want to achieve through our music.

So what is typical of EWH? and how do you feel that you contribute to the NZ music scene?
T – Our own take on soul music and how it can be expressed through the myriad of different influences we have collectively. Hopefully for NZ our own voice offers something different.

Your sound goes from very sultry and seductive D’Angelo styles to electro funk Kanye style. Is this intentional to create a new flavour for NZ or does it just flow naturally?
T – We’re just following what comes naturally to us now. There will always be influences that form the basis of what we create but hopefully it will continue to progress as we do.

Electric Wire Hustle – SHOWREEL

Are there any artists in Australian or Aotearoa music scene would you guys want to collaborate with? or maybe you are already?
T – In time more collaborations will happen. We’ve got a lot to explore between the 3 of us  – although we have started to scratch the surface having the opportunity to work with one of our local heroes Warren Maxwell – stay tuned.

Your Myspace currently has 2 tracks on it…less is more? or busy little boys?
M – We’re finishing our album – more tunes are coming! there are 3 now. Don’t you love the anticipation!?

What’s on the horizon for EWH? When can we expect you down under in Australia again?
T- soon. We’ve been honing our craft in the studio post summer and now that’s set for release it’s back to honing the live show for the real.

Electric Wire Hustle outdoorsYour music kind of has the feel of one of hip hops best albums “Do You Want More” from The Roots released back in ’93. Would you say that you guys are more representative of the old school styles?
T – Thank you. I think we can only hope to make music that is timeless.

M – Dizzy Gillespie said you always gotta have one foot in the past, one in the present and the other in the future.

O.G. told us to look out for you guys in an interview he did a while back… so how bout we pay it forward… who are you telling us to keep an eye out for in Australasia next?

T-Julien Dyne. His music is reaching, next level ish that you should be plugged into!!!

nice one guys… can’t wait to hear the 4th track on myspace… and 5th, and the 6th…

Low:Fi – NAS and Chali 2na head up hip hop feast!

Saturday, August 29th, 2009 | News | No Comments

Australian hip hop fans are blessed with the announcement of the massive ‘Low:Fi tour’ that will be traversing the country late October/early November this year. Featuring east coast hip hop heavyweight NAS, supported by the baritone himself Chali 2na of Jurassic 5, as well as turntable master Q-Bert and MC Supernatural, this is surely to be one of the biggest shows to hit our shores in 2009.

Long regarded as one of the best in hip hop, self proclaimed King of New York Nasty NAS heads back to Australia to headline his very own tour after supporting Kanye here late last year.  Since his 1994 debut album, ‘Illmatic’, regarded as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, NAS has remained at the forefront of the scene. Whether that be with his masterful flow and provocative rhymes, his well publicised ‘beef’ with Jay-Z (and subsequent reunion…) or the attention garnered by the controversial naming of his most recent album, there has been no escaping NAS’ impact on the shape of hip hop.

Coming through with strong support is the irrepressible Chali 2na of the now defunct Jurassic 5. Having just released his debut solo album, Fish Outta Water, the ‘verbal Herman Munster’ will be performing with a live band and is sure to entertain. Hip hop these days lacks such down-to-earth and laidback artists; having met 2na in Wellington back in 2004, I can honestly say he is everything that is right with the industry and is one of the nicest guys out, not to mention a solid performer on the mic and sure fire crowd-pleaser. No doubt he will be keen to impress fans with a combination of classic J5 bangers as well as decent collection of his new material.

Nas – I can

But it doesn’t finish there, the Low:Fi tour also features the MC/DJ combination of Q-Bert and Supernatural in a freestyle battle the likes of which you’ve never seen; a powerhouse pairing of arguably the most technically sound DJ in hip hop, and strongest freestyle MC in the scene. Qbert‘s involvement in the DMC team The Invisble Sqratch Piklz in the mid 90’s (along with Mix Master Mike) positioned him as the world’s most respected hip hop DJ, and was subsequently banned from competing after wining 3 consecutive titles! He and two time U.S. freestyle battle champion MC Supernatural will amaze with their man versus machine, head to head, battle to the death that is rarely seen outside of the U.S.

Now, some lucky punters across the country are going to be fortunate enough to see all of these artists in one show, others, however, will have to attend separate gigs; let me spell this out to avoid confusion:
Sat 24th October, Adelaide – Summer Break, Rymill Park

Sat 31st October, Sydney – The Enmore Theatre

Sun 1st November, Stradbroke Island – Island Vibe Festival
